Every parent knows that it’s important to read to your child, but the question many parents have is, “What should I read?” We want books that will teach and inspire our kids, and ones that will hold up to multiple readings — because little ones have no qualms about reading their favorite book twelve times in a row!
The families who make up the Indy With Kids community share many of the same values, namely, a love for family adventures, exploration, and all things Indy. In that spirit, I’ve put together this list of books that I think are perfect for young Hoosiers. Some are specific to our great city and state, and others focus on encouraging our little ones to get out and explore the world around them. I hope your family enjoys them as much as mine! Purchase from our links for the great low price on Amazon and we’ll get a portion of your purchase to put towards our community programs.
H is for Hoosier: An Indiana Alphabet by Bruce Langton – Learn the alphabet the Indiana way! This book takes you on a journey across the state, and teaches lots of historical facts and landmarks.
Good Night Indiana by Adam Gamble and Mark Jasper – This board book is the perfect bedtime read for the young hoosier. Stop by the Indianapolis Zoo, the Indiana Dunes, and more as you say goodnight to our state.
A Kissing Hand for Chester Raccoon by Audrey Penn – Starting a new adventure like daycare or preschool can be a little scary at first. Chester Raccoon’s story reminds children (and parents!) that the time apart is temporary, and shows them they are never far from their parents’ thoughts.
All The World by Liz Garton Scanlon – This beautifully illustrated book encourages children to explore their surroundings no matter where they are. “All the world is wide and deep,” and there is so much to see!
Curious Critters Indiana by David FitzSimmons – What kinds of animals live in Indiana? This book introduces youngsters to the animals that are native to our state with beautiful, bright photographs. This is the perfect book to read before a camping trip or day at the park!
Good Boy Blue! by Michael Kaltenmark – Butler University’s mascot, Blue the Bulldog, is one of the most loved animals in our state! Follow his adventures and see why he’s such a good boy. A must-have for Butler fans and future Bulldogs.
The Wonderful Things You Will Be by Emily Winfield Martin – One of the most important messages we can convey to our kids is that we believe in them. This book reminds kids that they are special and loved, and can do amazing things! I love to give this book as a baby shower gift.
Little Bitty Friends by Elizabeth McPike – You can make lots of friends outside — if you look closely! Reading this adorable book with encourage your children to look more closely at the world around them and discover a whole new world of tiny friends!
Larry Gets Lost in the Museum by John Skewes – The popular moose from the Larry Gets Lost series takes on the largest children’s museum in the world, which just happens to be here in Indianapolis. Follow along with Larry as he explores some of the most popular exhibits The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.
I hope these books prepare your little ones for a childhood full of adventure and exploration! For more book recommendations and reviews, check out It’s Fundamental Children’s Book Blog.
